Replication, partitioning, and sharding

By the end of today you can say which of replication and sharding solves which problem, explain replication lag and the bug it causes, and name what you permanently give up by sharding.

Why this matters

The database is the hardest thing to scale and the hardest to undo. Sharding in particular is close to irreversible, so understanding it before you need it is the only good time.

Build it

Set up a Postgres primary with one replica. Write to the primary, read from the replica, and measure the lag. Then construct the read-your-own-writes bug deliberately and observe it. Finally, write down three candidate shard keys for your library schema and the specific query each one would make painful.
